“It’s great to take the children out, but it costs so much money! ”
Amanda, Mum of 3 lovely children
This is one of the many comments I have received from parents as to why they don’t go out more often.
So I thought I’d put together this 10 great free things to do with kids based on what my children LOVE doing.
10 Great Free Things to Do with Kids – No 10
Find a lucky Clover
You’ll be surprised how long the kids will be entertained, and how their faces light up, when a lucky clover (with four leaves) is found!
Most clovers have 3 leaves and clovers with 4 leaves are a rarity. Therefore considered LUCKY.
You can find clovers in grassy patches but also in woodlands.
This is a great activity to combine with other activities such as kite flying, a picnic or a walk.

Go on a Bug Safari
Bug safaris are great fun. Even more so when you bring a insect book along to find out what you have found!
From catching flying insects with a net, to searching under logs and in the water….the options are endless.
Bring a net, a bucket for water creatures, a magnifying glass and/or little insect pots for further investigation.
Many children like finding creepy crawlies and will have heaps of fun for the afternoon.

Be Photographers for a Day
You don’t need expensive equipment for this outing. You could use your phone or any old camera really.
This is an activity which is great for both adults and children alike, but for different reasons. For a child the obvious part is being ‘a grownup‘ and being able to use something which is often kept safely in an adults hand.
The fun part for an adult, is seeing the world through your children’s eyes. Often we forget what it’s like to be a child, and it’s amazing how much they see which us adults completely overlook!
Be amazed at the photo’s you bring home tonight!

Go Bird Watching
You don’t need to identify every single bird, though this in itself could be great fun.
A park, some woodlands or in your back garden….you don’t have to go far! Just a great excuse to get outside with the kids!

Make a Camp Fire
Get the kids involved with building it and enjoy a hot chocolate with marshmallows on a dry autumn night.

Go For a Walk in the Woods
There are many places to go for a day out, but the woods are a great place for free play. You’ll come back recharged and energised!
Often there are woodlands on your doorstep undiscovered.
What are your favourite woodlands?

What’s not to love about a day on the beach pottering about with a net and a bucket?!
Can’t help but joining in with this one so make sure you bring enough nets!

Build a Den
Have you ever built a ‘den‘ before?
You see them more and more….. sticks standing up against a tree, slightly resembling a ‘stick tent ‘.
Den Building is great for being in the fresh air…team building and bonding…problem solving and creativity.
And most of all it’s a fun thing to do with Mum and Dad!

Have you tried crabbing?
The coast is full of crabs and you can catch them while rockpooling. But it’s even more fun using a crabbing line.
You need to put some bait (uncooked bacon will do) on the end of the line and throw it in the water. Wait for a crab to bite.
You can lift the crab out by pulling the line gently. As soon as possible hold a net underneath in case the crab lets go!
Once you have caught some crabs you can release them for a ‘crab race‘.
Which crab will make it back to the water first?

Watch a Sunset
My favourite Great Free Thing to do with Kids by far….
is Watching a Sunset.
If you think that watching a sunset is just for romantic couples, think again.
No two sunsets are ever the same and to watch a sunset is like watching a miracle.
The glow of the sun, the colours in the sky, the enormity of it.
Why would you not want to share that with your children?
Did I forget anything? Should something else have made this list….let me know in the comments below!
